The classic yet eclectic Teatro Ideal was designed by Jesus Buil Lluveras. The theater was built in 1936 for the Yauco Moving Pictures Company. Although built primarily as a movie theater, it also witnessed many live performances because of the lack of space in the region for the fine arts. During its early years, many political parties held conventions in the theater. The theater was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. It was closed and in a state of disrepair until renovations began in the mid-2000’s. Completion is due in October 2012.

Sorry for the typos on above comment.
What an incredible link! Thanks for posting it. Per the narrative, it appears that the outside of the theater is being restored but that there is no interior left for restoration. What is unclear is if the town of Yauco is recreating the interior in the original style. I know it’s a lot to ask, but I do agree that is is still wonderful to at least have the shell to admire rather than lose the entire thing.
En Yauco hay un Teatro Star.

No tenÃa idea.
Davsot, Is the Star still there or is this an old photo? Do you have the address? If so, you should add it to CT! It looks like it might date from the 1950’s.
AGR, the Ramily that you mention, also is not on CT. If you have info about where it is and if it is still there, you should add it as well.
I have never been to Yauco but travel to Puerto Rico about once a year. If I am ever in the area, I’ll stop by and take some photos.
LuisV, if one walks west from the Ideal and turns left on the first corner, the Ramily was the third or fourth building on the left, before a park further down. The theater must have been built after the Ideal since it had a simple more modern facade with the marquee and the signage and the interior was not as elaborate as the Ideal. I have passed by the area in the past few years but I don’t remember if the building was still there. When my dad was in college he worked at the Ramily as assistant projectionist during his summer vacation. The name Ramily is formed by the first two letters of the owner’s three children, RA for Raymundo — one his grandchildren was called Raymundo so I guess the owner’s son was Raymundo — and LY for Lydia. I don’t remember for what name MI stood for. This all I know about the theater.
As for the Star, the Yauco de mi infancia page on Facebook has pictures and comments on the Star but no address or other info.
In a story about the socioeconomic situation of Yauco in today’s Primera Hora newspaper, Mayor Abel Nazario is quoted as saying that the Teatro Ideal restoration will be finished in October. ( Just one months before the elections).
