Ken; this address on Google shows all kinds of locations all over France and Cananda, but never gets down to Reunion. I found another address, rue Louis Logourgue La Convnance, 97438 Sainte-Marie Ile de la Reunion, but that dosen’t work either. I tried all different kinds of combinations and the only thing that did work was, Sainte Marie, Reunion. I leave it up to you.
Mike, folks in the Armed Forces are just regular men and women who happen to be in the military. If they are on the “outside” they might go to “adult/foreign genre” why not still do that when in the military? They are still the same people. I even went the opposite and this sailor went and saw a kids flick. In ‘64, I went to Radio City Music Hall and saw MARY POPPINS, along with a stage show and that Mighty WurliTzer Theater Pipe Organ, ya just never know!
Been to Red Wing, missed this theater. It’s a nice town on the Mississippi, home of Red Wing Shoes. Also home of Red Wing Stoneware, that all started back in 1861, we have all sorts of antique Red Wing jugs and crocks in our home here in Illinois. If you take AMTRAKS train number 7 & 8 the EMPIRE BUILDER between Chicago and Seattle Washington/Portland Oregon you stop in Red Wing.
For those of you who don’t know anything about Reuinon because you slept or looked out the window when your teacher talked about it in geography, it’s an island (much like Hawaii) in the Indian Ocean, east of the island of Madagscar which is east of Africa. It is “part” of France and they speak French, though folks from France have a hard time understanding them and they use the euro.
Anyone from this great place have more info or photos?
My guess is the cinema is really at the RAF Mount Pleasant?
The SSVC has been around for over 50 years and provides movies for the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force just as the United States does for it’s Military. The U.S. Army, and U.S. Air Force get movies for about 117 theaters around the world through Reel Theaters of the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES). U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Navy, and U.S Coast Guard for about 40 theaters around the world from the Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR).
In both countries profits go to their Armed Forces Welfare Funds.
At the Phoenix Cinema flicks are shown every evening and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Movies are repeated every few days for a couple of weeks. Now and then they have an advanced screening.
I noticed CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE (rated U) will be released in the UK tommorow (Wenesday) 4 August 2010 and will be shown at the Phoenix Cinema on Sunday 15 August 2010 at 14:00 (2:00pm) & 19:30 (7:30pm). A week and a half that’s not too bad.
If you look at a map, those military and their families are at about the end of the world in the middle of nothing. I would guess the liberty (Navy talk for recreation on time off) isn’t very good. I hope it’s a nice theater!
Ken; I don’t think it’s a problem with Google Maps. I think it’s a problem with a great distance. I THINK Ascension is about 1,000 miles from Saint Helena, and Saint Helena is about 1,500 miles from Tristan da Cunha. It’s just a great big area. Sorta like asking Google to show the United States and all it’s Commonwealths and territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, American Saoma, Midway Island etc.). Google just can’t do it.
The present listing is of no help to anyone on the Google Map. In order for folks on CT to be able to see the island, I still say the island should be listed by itself.
You know all these island are making me wish I was young again and could join the Navy all over again!
“The Navy built this building, now the Geogetown Hall, at the turn of the century. The Naval maps of 1900 show it as the Recreation Rooms, although somehow it acquired the name of Bowling Alley. When the Navy withdrew, it was used as a hall and a cinema, with the ends of the building being used as a club, and as offices. Films were shown regulary untill 1987, when the higher cost forced a conversion to video projection. With the rise of TV and home video, the service ceased in 1990.”
Owned by Brandt Theaters of New York City, Harry Brant, President. At one time Brandt had 119 theaters in Connecticut, Washington D.C., Delaware, Florida, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.
