Located on the military base, about 30 miles from Port Stanley. The Phoenix Cinema is operated by the Services Sound and Vision Corporation(SSVC), who operate 18 cinemas located on British military bases around the world. The company was formed out of the Army Kinema Corporation and the RAF Cinema Corporation. The Phoenix Cinema has recently been fully equipped for 3D and all digital presentations.
Initially only personnel of Her Majesty’s armed forces and their families were allowed to attend the cinema, but in recent years it has allowed the local civilian population. By 2023 it was in use by the armed foreces and their families only. The Phoenix Cinema is the only cinema on the island.

My guess is the cinema is really at the RAF Mount Pleasant?
The SSVC has been around for over 50 years and provides movies for the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force just as the United States does for it’s Military. The U.S. Army, and U.S. Air Force get movies for about 117 theaters around the world through Reel Theaters of the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES). U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Navy, and U.S Coast Guard for about 40 theaters around the world from the Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR).
In both countries profits go to their Armed Forces Welfare Funds.
At the Phoenix Cinema flicks are shown every evening and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Movies are repeated every few days for a couple of weeks. Now and then they have an advanced screening.
I noticed CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE (rated U) will be released in the UK tommorow (Wenesday) 4 August 2010 and will be shown at the Phoenix Cinema on Sunday 15 August 2010 at 14:00 (2:00pm) & 19:30 (7:30pm). A week and a half that’s not too bad.
If you look at a map, those military and their families are at about the end of the world in the middle of nothing. I would guess the liberty (Navy talk for recreation on time off) isn’t very good. I hope it’s a nice theater!

Seems a bit mean that the general public are not allowed at the cinema, being loyal Brits and all that.
The airbase was completed in 1985, following the damage done during the Conflict in 1982, it was opened by HRH Prince Andrew. Both the cinema and bowling alley on the airbase are, in fact, open to the populace of the Islands, as well as MOD staff and families.
There is now a civilian cinema in Port Stanley itself, it has it’s own entry on here, under Harbour Lights Cinema.
I was unable to obtain exterior views of the location as it is a live military base, I trust you all understand, and are happy to see inside!
