He sounded like a neat person.

hi, Panzer65.

Thanks for your reply. Which type of theatre(s) are you referring to when you say that the more modern theatres are thriving well in many urban areas due to our tanked economy? The multiplexes? Just curious, because, from what I understand, many, if not most of the multiplex cinemas here in the United States generally are located in more suburban areas, in somewhat more secluded areas just right off of the big interstate highways.

If, you’re referring to the movie palaces (what few are left here in the United States), then, I think that many, if not most of the remaining movie palaces, are located in urban areas.

Correct me if I’m wrong, Panzer65.

Awwww…what a shame!! It’s always disheartening to hear of a theatre closing down like that.

Ouch!! Oh, no, ken mc. What a horrible thing to be robbed. $27.00 isn’t exactly peanuts, especially in today’s economy.

Love that marquee on the outside of the theatre. Thanks for the photo, Lost Memory.

Awwww…the original marquee on this theatre was much more original-looking…and beautiful. Too bad it was altered so much, instead of keeping it the old way and then just modifying it.

That’s right on the money, Panzer65. They not only want to raze beautiful old movie palaces and buid condos or stores, but multiplex cinemas as well. (However, I’m not sure of how well multiplexes will do, given the fact that a number of them have piled on debt, etc., )

What a horrible way for both a human being and a theatre to go down!

Just out of curiosity….how old a guy was Steve Levin?

All told, what’s going to happen with this cinema company, overall? Any thoughts? Just curious.

MPol commented about Happy 30th birthday, Superman!!! on Dec 15, 2008 at 3:43 pm

I saw both Superman I and Superman II at the (now-closed) Circle Cinema, in Brookline, MA, when they first came out. They were both cool films. From what I heard, though, Superman III and Superman IV weren’t so hot.

Anyway, happy 30th Birthday to Superman.

Without having known Steve Levin, much less heard of him until today, here’s holding his loved ones to the light during these dark and difficult times. All my condolences.

I plan on seeing the film “Curious Case of Benjamin Button” when it opens at your theatre.

From what I’ve read/heard, pretty much all live performances will be at the Boston Opera House from now on. Good idea, as it’s a cool place to see stage shows.

MPol commented about Lexington Venue on Dec 13, 2008 at 6:34 pm

The Lexington Theatre was also a nice little theatre. Growing up in a town that abutted Lexington, this was yet another theatre that my sister and I would occasionally attend. However, it was small enough so that if people failed to arrive early enough, they’d end up getting shut out of the movie they’d wanted to see. I do remember seeing the movie “Saturday Night Fever” at that theatre, roughly 30 years ago when it first came out, and enjoying it.

MPol commented about Charles Cinema on Dec 13, 2008 at 6:02 pm

The Charles Cinema, as I mentioned before, was a cool place, especially the large screen. Other movies that I saw there, in addition to West Side Story and Star Wars I, included Dr. Zhivago, Sounder, and The Empire Strikes back, and probably some others that I don’t remember.

Good Questions and points, Lost Memory, movies10063 and longislandmovies. Your points are well taken. WHY anybody would want to text/chat while watching a movie….beats me. I sure wouldn’t.

It’s agreed, the concession stands and general admission, unless one holds a membership to a movie palace, is rather expensive, to boot.

This whole thing sounds like a good way to eventually kill off the movie business entirely. Just my opinion.

CinemarkFan: If this kind of awful debt has gotten to National Amusements, and AMC, and then to Regal, what will happen to the independent movie palaces that’re left here in the United States, as a whole?

I rememember going to see a live concert that included that reunion of Glen Yarborough, the Kingston Trio, and some other folk/rock groups. What a concert that was! Both Glen Yarborough and the Kingston Trio were at their finest, and the Kingston Trio, as usual, sang their song “Charley on the MTA”, which had made them famous.

Hmmmm……..Interesting. Thanks for the info, Roger Katz. So, if Showcase Cinemas decides to sell other branches of their Cinemas in other states, do you think that will that mean somewhat fewer multiplex cinemas? Again, I’m just curious.

United Illuminating? Never heard of them. Who/what are they? Just curious. I, too, have heard about the sale of some of the Showcase Cinemas. I wonder, however, if another big franchise, such as AMC or Regal’s will buy them.
