While i am on stinkers at NATIONAL HILLS and I know every fancy theatre got a few bombs, here is one that played one week with many nights no one on the last show. Summer of 75. we had DOC SAVAGE with Ron Ely{Tarzan on TV].RatedPG we couldn’t even get the kid business.
I see it advertised onTURNER CLASSIC movies. They never sat in an empty theatre in Augusta.
Nov. 22 1977 Now Playing THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT with second feature ALEX AND THE GYPSY both rated R,Bet Chuck Dray, The projectionist, loved those two.
If you stay in business long enough you might get a movie made in the 1950’s. That is what happened to Daniel Village once it was Twinned it got DARBY O'GILL and THE LITTLE PEOPLE with Sean Connery way before 007.
NO protests in AUGUSTA,GEORGIA were i worked the film.THE Marquee said THE LEGEND OF BLACK CHARLIE even though i said i t should be what was one the one sheets out side,We did not change them like they did on 100 RIFLES with Jim Brown and Raquel Welch, when it played at the MILLER across the street.
In 1975 times were bad at the GRAND as well other downtown theatres playing at the GRAND… THE HOUSE OF SKULL MOUNTAIN rated PG shows at 1 2;40, 4:25, 6:15,8:00 and 9:45. My how the mighty have fallen.
Tisloews,if you go to the PALACE theatre in Athens i have reprinted some old City manager letters to other managers.Found the letters in the MILLER theatre filing cabnets years ago.
Yeah, At GCC in the mall we were constanly making drops.Seems like a smart crook could have figured that out walking to the bank in the mall, often with thousands of dollars underour B.O. stained jackets.
WE did not have a policy at PLITT ABC .Make one deposit at night. Sometimes I could get the cops to follw me to the bank when i was at COLUMBIA 1 and 2.
One night JIM and TOM were making a deposit at the Bank near the IMPERIAL and they were robbed at gunpoint. Tom had two deposit bags and with smart thinking gave the crook one bag .Lesser money,Tom told the cops.JIm said he wasn’t scared, but just mad that someone robbed them. The next week Mr.Tinney gets robbed by the same Crook from what they think.
I tried to get Jim or Tom to put the whole story of the robbery on CT,but no such luck. They have all disappointed me to have loved the business as much as you and I and i cannot get any of them to get on CT.
Yeah,I had an adding machine with paper shooting out of it.Karen was probably right, all my theatre buddies at Plitt had single Screens while i had a twin. By, 10:00 at the latest for Plitt I was ready to plan my night out while Tom and Charles were finished were done with paperwork at IMPERIAL AND National Hills.
I was always in a hurry, but I could do a BOR. Heck, I did PAYROLL for our theatre everyweek. No, WE never reused paper,LOEWS must have been as cheap as GEORGIA THEATRES.
Probably, one of DISNEY’S worst movies ever to be shown “GUS” about a mule that kicks field goals, and not it was not for the OAKLAND RAIDERS ,a team called the ATOMS, the production on this film was a joke and it quickly died. Disney’s policy with Drive ins kept it from closing any Augusta Drive in sooner. This had to be a bad time for Disney.
Unless you are in a major market I just don’t think it would work.Sure we made great money in the 70’s and early 80’s before ALL THIS NEW MEDIA from TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES to so many expaned cable channels,I think it would be a big risk.
I thought I might have an old press book from one of those movies i could send to you with the rest of the pictures.Ithought i had an SSSSSSS one sheet{HISS IT,Don’t say it } ,but haven’t been able to find it.
Karen Shaw was the Box office girl. It surprized me because Karen worked alot of matinees with Mrs,Smith. She was the one to encounter Kenny Rogers with the 100.00 bill.
The one sheet frame was like we had at Columbia 1 and 2 it snapped down on all four sides.Glad i drove down there and rescued it,from a very trashy theatre,There was another theatre across the street. But it was dry cleaning business i think.
I WAS able to get in the theatres years ago through a busted exit door that has now been welded shut.I took a bunch of pictures,The boothwas just like they left it.ERRIE,and strange like the world ended.
FROM THE 1987 REUNION PARTY…
Karen Harpe and Mike Rogers disagree on Karen being an Assistant Manager when Mike was there. “Mike couldn’t Add, I was alawys redoing our Box office reports, our daily reports, weekly reports and monthly reports!"Karen said. Tommy Capers jumps in,"Karen, that is why you felt like you were an assistant manager!” Karen said “Mike can’t accept a woman being his equal!” Well, I wasn’t taking all of this I asked Mr.Tinney who was at the REUNION party and he backed KAREN. I went off and got a beer.
Tom Weidmeiere tells this story. “We all drove up to the theatres and found NO managers! Bob Smith the relief projectionist was working his usual thursday night had keys and got us in: Still NO managers. We finally found out that Mr.Tinney was broke down somewhere, and it was Mike’s day off. We knew where he lived and someone drove to his place, but no Mike.
All we could do is open the doors, explain our problem to the public and take exact change.None of us could open the safe or even get the Ticket cartridges out for the Box Office. Bob helps out with the Popcorn and somehow Mr.Tinney gets there.
Couldn’t see CLOCKWORK ORANGE In Augusta,CHIEF OF Police Jim Beck said he would raid the IMPERIAL if it was shown. So a friend and myself drove to the CLASSIC which was still a beautiful single screen and watched the movie twice.
In them days one could buy a ticket and watch until closing. I don’t think the screen was as large as NATIONAL HILLS which also showed 70mm.
I took Pictures of the drive in when it was turned into a HAUNTED PALACE for Halloween.Theatre was closed.

Dan, Standard fare for GCC midnight shows,I had to pull teeth to get them to book 2001 at REGENCY 1.2.3. Cinemas.
ONE reason 2001 lost out on MAKE UP with the Oscars is the ACADEMY members thought it was real apes. True Story.
