The original Pastime Theatre opened in 1911 at 116 Malone Street (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures). In 1938 a new Pastime Theatre opened and has been closed, and reopened several times. It was the main theater in my parent’s home town. It last operated as a dinner and a movie house, like the Pal Theatre in Louisville.
The theater one time was owned by one of my cousin’s uncle Willard Renfroe. My cousin related a story about when “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” was playing. One night during the first show several boys left the emergency exit open and went home and got several chainsaws. During the second showing at a suspenseful time the boys started the saws and ran throughout the theater putting the patrons in a frenzy.

I have a bunch of stuff, but most of it comes from theatres I worked at, when they went dark I would go in a grab what I wanted before the wrecking ball got there, the best thing is to get off the beaten path on the back roads and run into an old closed theatre or drive in, sure there are a few around…
there was also another theatre downtown not far from here, don’t know why its not on here…
Mike the other theatre you are talking about is the Arcade Theatre and it listed on CT
Status should be: Closed.
Opening date is wrong. There is no building on this lot on the December 1923 Sanborn. The style of the facade looks more like something from the ‘30s. If there was an earlier Pastime, it was somewhere else.
An earlier Pastime Theatre at Sandersville was listed in the 1914-1915 American Motion Picture Directory, unfortunately with no address given.
The NRHP registration form for the Sandersville Commercial and Industrial Historic District says that the new Pastime Theatre opened at this location in 1938. It replaced the smaller Pastime that had operated on Malone Street since 1911.
The story about the Texas Chainsaw Massacre listed at the top of the page is true. I was a child when that happened–my mother is from there–and the story spread through town like wildfire. I was actually going to post it here and see it is already here.
I remember being dropped off here on more than one occasion to see a movie while my mom and her sister went shopping. I saw Charlotte’s Web here but can’t remember any more specific titles.
