It upgraded to all stadium seating plus added a 7-channel digital dobly surround sound system on May 14,1999 for its booking of THE PHANTOM MENACE that played on 2 screens on May 19,1999 under Consolidated Theatres.
Opened on December 13,1985 under Eastern Federal Theatres as an 8 screen complex as the Movies at Sardis North. Expanded to 12 screens and added all stadium seating and Dobly digital sound in 2000 when the name changed to Movies at Crownpoint 12. Regal Cinemas took over operations from 2005-2009 after its acquisition of Eastern Federal. Carolina Cinemas now operates this theatre.
The Gaston Mall Theatre was closed under Cineplex Odeon/Plitt Theatres in 1991. This theatre was never under Carmike Cinemas.
The Gaston Mall closed way before Carmike was about to take over!
Opened on November 24,1999…the Carousel Grande Luxury Cinemas are the only theatres in the greater Triad area to show smaller,independent ‘arthouse’ style films and foreign releases. There is a reowned Bistro Lounge with a few screens. You can purchase more upscale treats and even beer and wine items in the Lounge. The screens at the Bistro Lounge are much smaller with only 3 to 4 rows of leather seats instead of the auditorium style seating. These are the screens that show the more independent,limited release fare along with its foreign and Bollywood releases. The larger screens immediately to the left and right of the lobby show the more commercialized films. Some of the movies I’ve seen here are “Juno”,
“Hard Candy”,“Brokeback Mountain”,“Chloe”,and “Lust and Caution”. More recently they continue to show groundbreaking material like “Silver Linings Playbook”,“Before Midnight”,“Kon-Tiki”,and “Fill The Void” and much more.
The addition of the IMAX auditorium opened on May 20,2011 under Stone Theatres Group with a seating capacity of 358 for its grand opening feature with Johnny Depp in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN:ON STRANGER TIDES
When it was twinned in 1975, the original auditorium of 700 was split down the middle into two sections with the seating capacity at 350 each in both auditorium until it closed in 1986.
The REGENCY 4 closed as a second-run movie house in 1996.
By 1994-1995 it was still operating as a second-run discount house under Eastern Federal Corporation. But when this theatre closed,all of the second-run movies and discounts went to the Park 51 Cinema(way on the other side of town near Pineville)that took over until 2000.
By 1990,this was still a first-run theatre with upgraded features like cupholders on all seats and full DTS sound for its showing of Val Kilmer in THE SAINT.
Tom Cruise' DAYS OF THUNDER was shown in full DTS sound.
By 1991,it was still first-run venture with THE DOORS
It wasn’t until 1996 or 1998 when this theatre went from showing first-run features to becoming a second-run discount theater under Eastern Federal when the admission was $1.50 for all features(which took over the Regency Four that closed in 1996)until Eastern Federal closed this theatre in 2000.
The original STAR WARS movie played here first-run at the Berkeley. Not to mention THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RETURN OF THE JEDI got first-run billing here as well as THE PHANTOM MENACE.
SUPERMAN:THE MOVIE, E.T., STAR TREK II, BATMAN, and THE COLOR PURPLE played here first-run at the Berkeley.
Otto Preminger’s EXODUS was an Exclusive Carolina Showing Engagement at the Center Theatre on May 26,1961. It was the only showing of the film in the two Carolinas.
CORRECTION: Walt Disney’s SLEEPING BEAUTY was not a reserved seat engagement at the Manor. It was a Exclusive General Attraction in the Carolinas.
