“Bricks Flix” at the US 23 DI was a rousing success
FLINT, MI – The US 23 Drive in Theatre was filled up with mostly classic vehicles to kick off Back to the Bricks with the Bricks Flix last Tuesday night. Besides the cars parked at the drive-in, there were classic vehicles parked alongside, in front of and across Fenton Road from the drive-in. Disc Jockey Bob Steel played the oldies until shortly before the movie “The World’s Fastest Indian” started shortly after 9 p.m. on two of the drive-in’s three screens.

2011 Newport Beach Film Festival open for submissions
NEWPORT BEACH, CA — Celebrating its 12th year, the Newport Beach Film Festival announces its call for entries!
The 2011 Newport Beach Film Festival will spotlight over 300 films from around the world, including feature length narrative, documentary, short, animated and student films that will compete for a series of Jury, Festival Honors and Audience Awards.
In addition to film screenings, the Festival hosts premiere galas, an industry seminar series, and question and answer sessions with filmmakers.

Only operating cinema in Blythe closing
BLYTHE, CA — The All Star Cinemas, formerly the Blythe Cinema 4 is closing as of August 29. The theater, which opened about a decade ago, had been for sale in recent months.
Ramin Hashemi, managing partner of the local movie theater – the All Star Cinemas and Entertainment Center – came to town recently and sadly informed the staff that the curtain will come down on the only movie franchise in the Blythe environs on August 29th. The three-screen theater has been in operation for over a decade, replacing the old Blythe Movie Theatre that closed back in the early ‘90s.

“Paramount Anticipation Builds” in Huntington
HUNTINGTON, NY — The former IMAC Theater in Huntington Village may be getting a new lease on life, once again as a performance venue, much to the delight of local merchants…
According to nearby business owners, the potential arrival of Paramount Theatre, a concert venue at the site of the former IMAC theater on New York Avenue, is just the ticket to generate the foot traffic that will revitalize the local economy.
“I’m very much for it,” said Trudy Kaplan, owner of Porters, Ltd. on New York Avenue, just feet away from the theater. “The town desperately needs an influx of pedestrians.”

Fleur Cinema & Cafe offers distinctive filmgoing experience
DES MOINES, IA – Since 2001, the four-screen Fleur Cinema & Cafe has offered an unusual blend of the usual movie favorite snacks as well as wine, sandwiches, and other non-traditional fare; it also offers an eclectic mix of independent, mainstream, and classic films. The theater opened in 1970 as the Fleur 4.
The building inside features paintings from classic films, photos of iconic movie stars and cinema themes from the lobby to the bathrooms. Petersen said he often spots people walking around their lobby looking at the decor and talking about memories of the old movies.
Besides their regular run of movies, they play host for special events like the screenings of the 48-Hour Film Project. Corey Moss, Iowa State University graduate and director of the film “Dear Jack,” held a special screening and spoke at Fleur. Some of Fleur Cinema’s special promotions have included summer series of classic films played at midnight and Mimosas served with the “Sex & the City” movies.

“Windjammer” screening at Cinerama Dome
HOLLYWOOD, CA — Sunday September 5, at 11:30am, “Windjammer, The Voyage of the Christian Radich”. The film follows the adventures of Norwegian cadets on their 238 day training cruise. “Windjammer”, produced by Louis de Rochmont premiered at the Chinese Theatre and was filmed in CineMiracle, a 3 strip photographic process similar to Cinerama.
The version playing at the Dome is a high definition digital print, filling the Cinerama screen, with a RCA 7 channel soundtrack. The print used for remastering was badly faded with a Norweigan soundtrack from the Swedish Film Institute. The remastering was directed by Cinerama historian David Strohmaier and produced for Cinerama by John Sittig. Tickets are available at ArcLight.

Seeking 35mm print of “Phantom of the Paradise
Fox doesn’t vault prints. Criterion doesn’t have it in 35mm and a few other sources only allow reel to reel.
Does anyone know where I can track down a print for a November rental rock double feature?

Nokia Theatre, nee Astor Plaza, to be renamed the Best Buy Theatre
NEW YORK, NY — The Nokia Theatre Times Square which, as a movie theater, was known as Loew’s Astor Plaza, will soon be rechristened the Best Buy Theatre. Besides upgrading the interior, the electronics chain will also use it to showcase its products in its lounge and at events according to an article in Broadway World.
A spokesperson from Best Buy said that this will be the company’s first venture into gaining rights for an entertainment venue. Best Buy’s chief marketing officer, Drew Panayiotou says of the venture: “If you’re going to shows, and you’re going to shows in Times Square, then you’re the kind of customer we want to build a relationship with.”
A Nokia spokesperson said that the company wanted to focus on “reaching customers where they consume content, online, as opposed to at a physical venue,” which was part of the reason they didn’t renew the Times Square deal.
