    New chapter for Skokie Theatre

    SKOKIE, IL — After closing two months ago, the future wasn’t too bright for the Skokie Theatre. Now, the owners of the nearby Gorilla Tango Theatre have stepped up to buy it and bring regular entertainment back. They plan on showcasing live performances and occasional films as well.

  • This is DCP at the Film Forum

    NEW YORK, NY — With theaters around the world making the switch to digital, one of the most famous repertory houses still standing, the Film Forum, decided to use this time of change as a platform for discussion. Their “This DCP” (“DCP” standing for Digital Cinema Package") festival is meant to show their audience what they’ll be missing (or possibly what they’d be gaining), with a conversion.

    Tragedy strikes theatre

    ABBOTSFORD, WI — A fire this past weekend not only destroyed the 60+ year-old Abby Theatre, but more importantly, the tragedy took one of the firefighters as well. The cause of it is still under investigation.

    While the Oscars have passed us, I found this interesting piece about one man’s tradition of seeing all the nominated best picture candidates each year. He argues that with the advent of social media, studios can’t use nomination buzz to drive film revenues. Regardless, catching up on the nominees still has an audience as proven in AMC recent showcase.

  • Theater screen for sale

    A local AMC Theater upgraded one of their theater screens to an IMAX and gave a friend of mine the 38’ x 16’ theater screen that they took down. Here is a craigslist link to the information/pictures and my email is . Looking for around $750 for it. It weighs around 100 lbs so delivery is way too expensive…recommend pickup.

    Balboa Theater birthday party not to be missed

    SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Still going strong after 86 years, the Balboa Theatre will celebrate its birthday Sunday. As part of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, they’ll show “Safety Last!” that evening with accompaniment from renowned pianist Frederick Hodges.

    HAMBURG, PA — Even after a significant drop in ticket prices, the Strand is still struggling. The owner hopes to sell it to someone or some group that can support it because he cannot afford the marketing and broader range of entertainment he feels it requires to survive.

    A new lease on life for a rundown Tel Aviv cinema

    TEL AVIV, ISRAEL — The historic Hamerkaz Cinema could have new life as residences. After opening in 1956, the theatre spent most of its years screening adult films. The gutted interior could be converted into living spaces and still maintain some of the original features that are still left on the facade.
