High Point college instructor’s photographs of classic movie theaters may become basis for new book
HIGH POINT, NC — Benita VanWinkle, an instructor at High Point University, has been compiling theatre photos for over 30 years. She’s now considering compiling them in a book that would highlight the cinemas of various eras.

Cinema III to get new owners and theater upgrades
CHARLEVOIX, MI — Luther and Mary Kurtz have purchased Cinema III from Charlevoix State Bank and plan to upgrade the projectors and seats. They have experience working in theaters across the country and plan on holding special events at the theatre as well.

Economy, cost of going digital claim another victim: Sixty-year-old Strand to close Jan. 6
PRESTONBURG, KY — The historic Strand Theatre is set to close on January 6 after 60+ years in business. They just couldn’t afford to upgrade their twin screens, leaving the city with no operating cinema.

Century 16 to reopen on January 17
AURORA, CO — The Century 16 site of the tragic shooting last summer, will reopen in January. January 18-20 will be free to the public. The theatre where the tragedy took place has been converted to XD with a wall to wall screen.

Pleasant Hill’s domed theater may soon be history
PLEASANT HILL, CA — The famed CineArts 5, one of the last standing domed theaters, may be demolished. SyWest Development wants to revitalize the southern half of the shopping center where it’s located and plan to build a Dick’s Sporting Goods and some specialty shops in its place.

Cineworld buys Picturehouse cinemas
Cineworld is growing with its acquisition of the art-house chain, Picturehouse. The 21 theaters, including the Little Theatre in Bath and the Cameo in Edinburgh, went for almost 50 million pounds.

Photographer ’s project aims to capture “the beauty of projectors and portraits of the people who run them before they’re gone forever ”
NEW YORK, NY — New York City-based photographer Joseph O. Holmes is working on a project called “The Booth” where he captures images of projectionists all over the Northeast. The aim to accurately detail the atmosphere of these people and the rooms they work in before this craft fades away with digital projection.

After three dark years Edison Park 8 to reopen Dec 22 after $1.5 million in renovations
FORT MYERS, FL — The Edison Park 8 has been closed for years but it’s making a comeback later this month. The owner struggled to find investors before he eventually threw in his own money to modernize and reopen the theatre.
