FREE EVENT: “Stages Of Decay” author Julia Solis to do talk in Waltham
WALTHAM, MA — Alex Green, owner of Back Pages Books, will be hosting a free event this Saturday with photographer Julia Solis and Waltham-based filmmaker Bryan Papciak. They will be discussing Julia’s new book “Stages of Decay”, which showcases deteriorating theater buildings and performance spaces from around the world.
The book has just been covered with great acclaim in the New York Times and Huffington Post and Back Pages Books is her only stop in New England. The event will be hosted at Back Pages Books, in Waltham MA, and will begin at 7pm.

35mm screenings at the Portage Theater
CHICAGO, IL — “You’ll put your eye out!”
This familiar warning gets a fresh demonstration this summer in THE VIKINGS, the awesome widescreen adventure featuring a one-eyed Kirk Douglas. It’s one of several lessons to be gleaned from the Northwest Chicago Film Society’s latest calendar. Film Society habitués will also learn what it takes to survive as a gay black hustler in pre-Stonewall New York, what constitutes proper etiquette at a Beacon Hill dinner party, and how to make the crippled walk again! Who says learning can’t be fun?
The Northwest Chicago Film Society is proud to announce its eighth, extra-educational season, which will run from May 1 to August 28 at the historic, newly renovated Portage Theater. Building upon its specialty of screening strange films in beautiful 35mm prints (and, occasionally, beautiful films in strange prints), the Northwest Chicago Film Society’s summer season will span more than six decades of cinema history—from 1929’s sci-fi pacifist paean HIGH TREASON to Jim Jarmusch’s laconic post-acid, post-Western DEAD MAN (1995). You’ll get something different every week—and, with our newly expanded calendar, you can even get something different twice a week!

Famous author to reopen Cocteau
SANTA FE, NM — George R.R. Martin of “Game of Thrones” fame, has purchased the Cocteau Cinema with plans to reopen. While he will not personally operate, the Santa Fe resident wanted to give something back to the community by reopening the neighborhood theatre that’s been closed since 2006.

Another life for the Louxor
PARIS, FRANCE — While many cinemas are closing, a special one closed for 25 years has just reopened. The Louxor is back and better than ever. They plan to focus on showing films from developing nations to cater to the local cinephile audience.

Frazer movie theater closes
EAST WHITELAND, PA — Only opening in 1999, the UA East Whiteland closed last week. They plan to tear it down for a Toyota dealership.

Bow Tie Cinemas to acquire Clearview
Bow Tie to become eighth largest motion picture exhibitor in the U.S. with the largest number of theater locations in the New York metropolitan area.
Chelsea Cinemas to become flagship Bow Tie theater in Manhattan.
RIDGEFIELD, CT and BETHPAGE, NY — Bow Tie Cinemas and Cablevision Systems Corporation (NYSE: CVC) today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Bow Tie will acquire substantially all of the Clearview Cinemas theaters from Cablevision. Following the acquisition, Bow Tie Cinemas will become the eighth largest theater circuit in the United States with 388 screens in 63 locations in seven states. The company will have the largest number of theater locations in the New York metropolitan area upon closing the acquisition. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

A new beginning for old Teaneck movie theater
TEANECK, NJ — Shuttered last November, the Cedar Lane Cinemas is making a comeback. Apparently, it’ll be better than ever with new seats, floors, and of course, projection. The owner of the Sayville Theater saw an opportunity and now has a 20-year lease.

LAS VEGAS, NV — Many items debuted at CinemaCon last week but one that particularly stood out was the Shake n’ Share. The popcorn lid serves as a cover to evenly distribute toppings and also as an extra bowl.
