News About This Theater
- Apr 29, 2013 — Bow Tie Cinemas to acquire Clearview
On the site where Cavanagh’s Irish Steak and Ale House stood from 1876 ‘til 1971 (followed by after-hours club Galaxy 21 in the mid-1970’s and storefront performance space the Squat Theatre in the late-1970’s and early-1980’s), Cineplex Odeon unveiled Manhattan’s then-largest multiplex on July 14, 1989.
On that date, the theatre’s first six auditoriums featured “Do the Right Thing”, “Weekend at Bernie’s”, and, with one print being shown in 70mm, “Lethal Weapon 2”. The final three auditoriums of the $15 million facility opened later in the year.
Management of the facility was assumed by Clearview Cinemas in late-Autumn of 1998 during the divestiture of 13 Cineplex Odeon houses throughout Manhattan resulting from a consent decree deal struck between merging Loews Theatres and Cineplex Odeon to satisfy the state’s Attorney General and the Department of Justice. In June 2013, Bow-Tie Cinemas took over. In late-2014 the theatre was being remodeled, with all-new extra wide rocking chairs with extra legroom, and reserved seating. In July 2016 it was taken over by Cinepolis. It was closed on January 8, 2023 and stripped out in March 2024 in readiness for internal demolition for conversion to an apartment building. By March 2025 the entire building was being demolished to build condominiums.

I meant to say it certainly would NOT be AMC or regal taking over this movie theater.
This would be the perfect spot for a new Landmark Theaters. Especially after the loss of the Sunshine Cinema.
Wow. This closed, and in an article regarding Regal closings across the country with Union Square regal mentioned in that list to close,I doubt they will find a new tenant. Landmark doesn’t seem in any hurry to expand, and they’ve let thier Ritz 5 in Phila go to seed. Unsettling times in the exhibition business.
The end is near for this building. Walked by last week, peeked in through the boarded-up entrance, and its interior is being gutted in advance of demolition.
Likely, according to an out-of-state film exhibitor who won some of its seats, screens and stereo speakers at auction last fall, to be replaced by an apartment building.
A neighboring building has a full demolition in progress, but the current active Work Permit here is for full interior demolition.

The building is being demolished, and causing issues to many of the adjoining businesses to be closed, including the iconic “Barracuda” on 22nd st.
according to owner Bob Pontarelli in a statement on Facebook
““In the past few months, a major demolition of the buildings surrounding Barracuda was undertaken,” he wrote. “This included the movie theater that shares our entire East wall and apartments on 23rd street that share our stage. This demolition is the first step of a huge condo project. The damage from the construction has significantly affected the interior and overall operation of the bar. The next step will be the drilling of the bedrock in order to begin tower construction. There is no way to anticipate the additional damage and risks that could arise in the future. It is impossible to conduct business as usual.”

The former Chelsea Cinemas building is now fully demolished, not a trace of it remains, only a small pile of rubble there now.
I hate they closed and demolished this.
I wish another chain to this place over, saw most of my films when Cineplex Odeon operated it. But went when others operated it.
