Free Presentation on the York and Capitol Theaters at the Athol Historical Society
ATHOL, MA — Throughout the twentieth century, significantly during the first half, movie theaters have played a vital role in both American society and culture. These buildings of public assembly, many of which were ornately designed, brought communities across the nation a wide variety of entertainment, public service, and inspiration.
The town of Athol Massachusetts had two theaters that did just that. The York Theatre and the Capitol Theatre both opened in the year 1930, and during their thirty-year legacy provided patrons with a luxurious atmosphere to enjoy a wide array of entertainment.

Historic Wickenburg movie theater hopes to reel in funds
WICKENBURG, AZ — The Saguaro Theatre stands proud as one of the oldest single-screen theaters in the state. It may not last much longer if they can’t raise $50,000 by February for a digital projector. They’ve launched a fundraising for the 270-seat theatre, the only one for miles.

Overhaul for Glendale’s Alex Theatre
GLENDALE, CA — State money has dried up by Glendale officials aren’t about to turn their backs on the Alex too. The city is investing $5.3 Million to renovate the theatre and make additions backstage that will make the venue more viable for larger productions.

Business Park moves in on the site of two former theaters
AUBURN HILLS, MI — Amson Dembs Development is taking the place of the former Showcase Cinemas and Blue Sky Drive-In. The theater has been vacant for 11 years and the new development’s first phase should be completed in the next 12 months.

Spielberg and Lucas discuss claim more expensive movies are coming
In a panel at USC last week, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas commented on their predictions for the film industry. They argued that with studios funneling more and more money into big budget actions flicks, the industry will eventually implode. They say this will lead to a huge gap in variable pricing to support the films with larger budgets.

NEW YORK, NY — The Wall Street Journal looked at new theaters popping up in New York, specifically in regards to how they look from the outside. With new cinemas in the works, unique styles seem to be a priority as well.

Eveningstar expansion proposed
BRUNSWICK, ME — The Eveningstar Cinema is looking at moving to an entirely new location near Brunswick station so it can expand its offerings. The new theatre would feature multiple screens for their art-house fare but the owner must raise $4 Million to complete his vision.

Crystal Theatre photo - but which Crystal?
Can anyone help identify this mystery theater?
The photo is from 1958 and it shows a small Moderne-style theater next to an A&P. There’s a 1957 Buick parked in front but the license plate isn’t clear enough to read the state. Here’s a link to the photo.

Orpheum summer series tracks evolution of cinema
MEMPHIS, TN — The annual summer film series at the historic Orpheum Theatre will look at nine decades of film with seminal films from each. Such classics “Gone with the Wind” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” will be featured along with pre-show lectures.

Movie theater returning to Tempe’s Mill Avenue
TEMPE, AZ — The former Centerpoint 11 which had a second life as a live music venue is now returning to its cinema days. AMC is taking it over and will reopen it in the fall.
