News About This Theater

Wickenburg, Arizona, 1968

The Saguaro Theatre opened in 1948, for the Harry L. Nace Theatres & Harkins Theatres chain. Now independently operated, this single-screen movie house was restored in around 2006, and continues to show first-run movies today, including weekend matinees. The theater also hosts live entertainment, including Western melodramas, during Wickenburg’s annual Gold Rush Days.

Coming soon – illumination of the giant cactus at the historic Saguaro Theatre. Just like in the early days of the theatre operation, the towering saguaro cactus will finally be relit. Thanks Brian, Diane, Scott and staff.

Congrats to the new owner of the Saguaro. I know you’ll retain the historical value and beauty of this gem.

The May 29, 1948, issue of Boxoffice reported from Wickenburg that the Saguaro Theatre “…was opened here recently by Dwight ‘Red’ Harkins in association with the Nace interests of Phoenix.” The item said that Harkins had designed the theater himself.

What great memories. I’m so glad to see the theatre still operating and in great condition. My brother and I spent many Friday nights at the double feature while parents went to dinner at Gold Nugget or the Frontier Inn. No movie was off limits so long as you paid your $3 dollars at the door. Oh, and don’t try to sneak in cheaper circle K candy purchased during intermission. Many thanks to the Ways (owners at the time) for running a great theatre. I truly loved that place.

I added a photo to the gallery of Wickenburg Way from the late 1960s. It is a Kodachrome slide that I found in a projector from an estate sale.

I was thrilled to see that the theatre is not only still standing but still in operation.

Dwight D. Eisenhower had just been sworn in as our 34th President when I was walking down the aisle on one of my visits of The Saguaro Theatre and many special movies were shared with friends popcorn, candy & pop. It was the only place in town to be on a Friday or Saturday night LOL not to mention the ticket-pass that the owner Murphys' gave out mid movie. Those days are long gone but the memories live on.
