Elizabethtown theatre to go on auction today
ELIZABETHTOWN, PA — Following a bank foreclosure, Movie Town is up for auction today at 11am. While there is no minimum bid, you need to make a $20K deposit. The theatre does not have digital projectors yet too.

Ottawa movie theater could be world’s oldest
OTTAWA, KS — Owners of the Plaza Grill have done their homework and are working to get noticed by the Guinness Book as the world’s oldest continuously operating theatre. They’re still going strong too and have many original elements.

Save the Boyd Rally Tomorrow
PHILADELPHIA, PA — We’ve been covering the fight to save the Boyd Theatre and tomorrow you can make a difference. Friends of the Boyd will be holding a rally tomorrow at 11:30am outside the theatre to send a message that the Boyd should stay as is.

Casey Affleck speaks out about reopening Harvard Square
CAMBRIDGE, MA — The Harvard Square Theatre has been closed since July 2012 with no feasible reopening plans on the table. However, actor Casey Affleck has spoken out about the need to make it an arts venue again. He hasn’t found the partners to do it though and so far there has been no communication with the building’s owner.

Downtown Buffalo’s only movie theater may soon go dark
BUFFALO, NY — The 7-screen Market Arcade is facing a tough decision as it hasn’t made the jump to digital. That’s not the only hurdle though as the theatre is in desperate needs of upgrades across the board.

Studio M Theatre closed
MIDLAND, MI — The three-screen Studio M Theatre in the Valley Plaza in Midland MI closed on December 1. It first opened in 1968 as a single screener which was twinned in 1978 with the third screen added in 1979. It was a victim of competition from the NCG Midland Cinemas and not being able to afford digital projectors.

Comments and Behavior On This Site
To the CT Community, I feel compelled to post a notice about the recent run of behavior in the comments section. I’m not going to go on and on about it but those who frequent the site may be able to cite some of the offending examples. Instead, I’ll simply make this brief. One or both of these things will happen: 1) Violators of the user policy may be immediately suspended from the site. (No more pleasant warnings in advance.) 2) The ability to comment on theater pages may be suspended indefinitely. If you care about this site and about these theaters, please keep your comments on point and not about one another. We’ve been online for thirteen years and I’m deeply dismayed by what’s going on over the past two weeks. It ends today, one way or another.

Viva blames AMC for closure
HOUSTON, TX — The Viva Cinema opened seven months ago with the hope of serving the community with a mix of first-run Hollywood features with Spanish subtitles and Latin American films entirely in Spanish. They’ve now closed and argue that it’s the result of AMC blocking them from showing certain films. Their nearby Studio 30 also started offering subtitled films right before Viva’s opening.

Swap Shop celebrates 50 years
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — The Swap Shop had its 50th Anniversary a couple weeks ago, eerily on the same date as the JFK Assassination. The 14-screen complex is still going strong with almost 100 acres of entertainment.

Berwick faces Go Digital or Go Dark
BERWICK, PA — The Berwick Theater in Berwick Pennsylvania is facing a dilemma. It must convert to a digital projection system within the next year or so. If it does not it will no longer be able to show movies because Hollywood will no longer distribute films on..film.
This same situation is being repeated all over the United States as small town theaters and drive in movies must either “go digital or go dark”. Quite often the local citizens will rally around the theater and work with its owner to raise the 60 – 100 thousand dollars that is needed for a digital conversion. Sometimes though a solution cannot be found and theaters do go dark and, when that happens, we all lose a piece of our history.
