Multiplex proposed for Boyd
PHILADELPHIA, PA — A proposal by iPic Theatres could lead to an eight screen theatre and restaurant in new construction replacing all but the front of the Boyd Theatre. This can only go forward if iPic can prove that restoring the theatre would be cost prohibitive. Howard Haas of Friends of the Boyd strongly opposes the proposal due to the irreparable damage it would cause.
Further information and quotes from Haas are available at Philly.com and Hidden City.

Large automaker Honda has put their money where their mouth is with their summer initiative, Project Drive-In. In a month, by popular vote, they’ll be giving away five digital projectors to theaters in need.
With so many stories coming in about theaters closing because of digital, it’s refreshing to hear about a corporation getting involved.

Barron could close this summer
PRATT, KS — The clock is ticking for the Barron Theatre as the owners look to sell the property. They simply can’t cover the costs of operating it anymore and a digital conversion would just make things worse for them financially. If it closes, residents would have to drive to Kingman or Larned for a flick.

Digital Conversion Dooming Barron Theatre?
Kansas TV stations KSN and KAKE are reporting that the 83-year-old Barron Theatre in Pratt may close, starving the city of its only remaining theater and forcing residents to drive 100 miles – yes, 100 miles – to other theaters in Wichita or Hutchinson. While ticket sales are brisk, the owners don’t want to invest in digital projection and see this as a good time to sell the Barron or close the theater. Maybe they should try Kickstarter …

Boosted Campaign for Digital Projection- Theatre Royal Christchurch
CHRISTCHURCH, NEW ZEALAND — Movie lovers across New Zealand are invited to help embed the art of cinema in the artistic hub of resurgent Christchurch. The substantial post-quake rebuild of the Isaac Theatre Royal provides the perfect opportunity to bring back a sense of occasion to movie going and celebrate the art and artists of the giant screen in Christchurch.
All that’s missing is the projectors, the screen and the audio system. We’re looking for your assistance in getting them there! The Christchurch City Council is backing the project with a $70,000 grant towards the estimated $280,000 costs, provided that the New Zealand International Film Festival (NZIFF) find the balance of the money before July 5.
