The Struggle to Reclaim America’s Cinema Heritage…That’s the title of a festival of documentary films about a variety of historic theatres — saved, lost and on the brink. The venue is the Portage Theatre, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave., in Chicago, as a part of the Portage Film Forum.

Capitol Theatre to temporarily open for show
WINDSOR, ONTARIO, CANADA — Theatre Intrigue has apparently reached a deal with the bankruptcy trustee of the closed Capitol Theatre to temporarily reopen the theatre so the theatre group could stage a student production of Les Miserables there from September 21 to October 6.
The theatre group needs to pay for liability insurance and sign waivers to protect theatre assets from damage. Theatre Intrigue could not find another venue in the Windsor area to stage the production and wanted to use the closed Capitol Theatre. Trustee Stephen Funtig expressed unexpected support to allow for the use of the theatre which gave the Windsor arts community hope that the theatre can return to full use as an arts facility.

Historic Theatre Workshop: Curtains Up!
On November 8th-10th, 2007 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Midwest Office of the National Trust for Historic Preservation is sponsoring a two and a half day workshop on the restoration and sustainable use of historic theatres. Underwritten by the Jeffris Family Foundation of Janesville Wisconsin, a constant supporter of so many preservation activities in that state, the workshop is primarily intended for historic theatre owners and stewards, architects, historic preservation professionals, and those considering embarking on a theatre project.
Registration forms and scholarship applications are available from the Wisconsin Historical Society’s website.

Light the Lyric Benefit BBQ
FLATONIA, TX — Light the Lyric Benefit BBQ being held on Sept 14th from 6pm till 10 pm and on Sept 15th from 11am till 7 pm at 120 E South Main St in downtown Flatonia.
Proceeds to go towards repairs to the Neon lights and letters, currently all 8 transforms are damaged, and one of the “C"s is rusted and fallen. Also missing all of the letter "R"s so its difficult to post any news on the marquee.
Hope to find a Sign Company that can repair the marquee in time for the 35th Annual Czhilispiel in October 26, 27, and 28th.

Goonies screening at Grandin
ROANOKE, VA — Those of you who live in Virginia may be familiar with the Grandin Theatre, and their renovation success story. The theatre had to close its doors for a second time some seven years ago, but the theatre was able to reopen in 2002 and has not looked back since.
On the weekend of August 24th, the Grandin will show the 1985 film “The Goonies” in its main auditorium for midnight screenings both Friday night and Saturday night. The film was screened at the Grandin for a midnight screening several years ago, and it was a huge success. “The Goonies” is showing this weekend in Denver, Minneapolis, and Brookline, Mass.

Master class with Sean Callery
In this special Master Class, two-time Emmy Award winning composer Sean Callery demonstrates today’s film and television composers work. Using a clip from the award winning TV series 24, Callery develops the scene musically from start (dialog only) to finish (playing the completed broadcasted version).
Using computer and music keyboard, live parts are added giving the audience the opportunity to experience different subtexts and moods and enhanced drama of the scene. Paraguayan composer-in-residence Sagardia will contribute his individual musical variation.
The intimate setting of the Villa Aurora will provide a rare opportunity for composers, directors and those interested in film to ask questions of these composers about their work and professional experiences.

City celebrates Uptown with street party
GRAND PRAIRIE, TX — People will be dancing in the streets from 7-10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, at a free block party in Grand Prairie when the city celebrates completing the exterior restoration of the Uptown Theater, located at 126 East Main Street.
The Uptown Theater originally opened in 1950 as a movie theater. In 2005 the City of Grand Prairie purchased the theater and two adjoining buildings to create a multi-use performing arts center. In addition to being the home for the Grand Prairie Arts Council (GPAC) productions, the City of Grand Prairie will present a series of performances featuring regional and national touring productions.
Lights, Camera, UPTOWN: A Marquee Celebration will feature free entertainment throughout the evening from local performance groups including Children of the Strings Orchestra, Amanda’s Dance, and a theatrical presentation from GPAC. Food and beverages will be offered for sale by local restaurants. Free face painting “with entertainment themes” will be available for kids of all ages.
After dark a brief program will culminate in the lighting of the new digital marquee and the restored pink and green neon. Grand Prairie favorites The Fugitives will perform immediately after the lighting ceremony.

Garden Theatre announces Inaugural Season
WINTER GARDEN, FL — The Garden Theatre is opening its doors for the first time in over 40 years. The renovated venue in downtown historic Winter Garden is now converted from a single screen cinema to a 299-seat performing arts venue.
The Winter Garden Heritage Foundation and the Garden Theatre proudly announce its inaugural performing arts season. In addition to the theatrical productions listed, classic movies and community events will be added to the season. Tickets prices vary $10-$25, and go on sale late November.
