    Restored Kimball Theatre celebrates 75th Anniversary with film festival

    WILLIAMSBURG, VA — The Kimball Theatre will celebrate its 75th anniversary next month with a film festival called “When the Movies Come to Town! 75 Years at the Williamsburg/Kimball Theatre – A Festival of Movie History.”

    Co-sponsored by the Kimball Theatre, the College of William and Mary Film Studies Program and the Reves Center at William and Mary, the festival will showcase a wide selection of films that have played at the theater over the past eight decades. The screenings will be accompanied by receptions, live performances and talks by renowned scholars.

    Originally known as the Williamsburg Theatre, the playhouse opened on Jan. 13, 1933 with a grand opening celebration that featured fireworks, multi-million candlepower spotlights and an air show. It was one of the first air-conditioned buildings in town and served for decades as its only first-run movie house before becoming an arthouse showing foreign and independent films.

    Possible screening at Rialto Saturday

    SOUTH PASADENA, CA — Not regularly showing films since August, the Rialto Theater will supposedly show “Rocky Horror Picture Show” this Saturday evening. No information on specific time or admission prices.

    Free holiday movie at Hornbeck

    SHAWNEE, OK — Keeping with their annual tradition, the Hornbeck Theatre will be showing a free screening of “Daddy Day Camp”.

    A Shawnee holiday tradition reaches another milestone when Jones Theatres presents its 86th annual free Children’s Christmas Show at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hornbeck Theatre in downtown Shawnee.

    On screen will be the family comedy “Daddy Day Camp,” rated PG. Cuba Gooding Jr. stars in the film. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. and the movie starts at 10 a.m. The movie is free to all ages up to the theater’s 500-seat capacity. Following the movie, Christmas candy will be distributed as people exit.

    Begun in 1921 by Oklahoma pioneer showman Jake Jones Sr., the tradition was continued by his son Johnny H. Jones and daughter Ruby H. Jones. The show is continued in their memory by grandson Ronny Jones.

    Benefit for Columbia Music Hall

    A raising the roof benefit for the partially destroyed Columbia Music Hall, Portsmouth , Ohio, will be held in Huntington, W.Va. In addition, an account has been set up at US Bank for donations to repair the theater.

    The season of miracle looms upon us, and, a Huntington live music club will hold a benefit for the rebuilding of the Columbia Music Hall, which burned Nov. 11 in Portsmouth, Ohio. An up and coming venue for all types of live music, the Columbia had originally been a vaudeville movie theatre, which opened in 1912.

    Although the bands have not yet been finalized, Franklin Toland, MF Productions, said that the concert will occur at The Paradox Rift, just off Third Avenue across from the Marshall football Stadium on Dec. 14.

    ALBANY, NY — The Palace Theatre will be playing two Christmas movies this December.

    On the 10th of December, A Christmas Story will play at 7 PM.
    On the 14th of December, It’s A Wonderful Life will play at 7 PM.

    Admission if $5 for both events.

  • Mt. Vernon’s Granada Theater celebrates 70th anniversary

    MT. VERNON, IL — Next week, the historic Granada Theater celebrates its 70th.

    For three days, it will be bright lights in a little city with a number of events celebrating the legacy and long anticipated comeback of the historic Granada Theater.

    This year marks the 70th anniversary of the grand old Granada Theater which opened in December of 1937 and to commemorate the occasion, Granada Center of the Performing Arts board member David Lister said the community is invited to come together and enjoy all the theater has to offer starting on December 14, 2007.

    The restored marquee will be lit for the first time in several years and marks an important milestone in the renovation of the theater. A time capsule buried under the marquee will also be opened. It is said to contain artifacts dating from the 1930s to the 1980s. The capsule “treasures” will be on display at a variety of events to raise money for the ongoing restoration and then reburied for future generations.

  • California Theatre in San Jose to host classic films for Christmas

    SAN JOSE, CA — The beautifully restored California Theatre is presenting two weeks of classic films presented by the non-profit Stanford Theatre Foundation from December 18th thru December 31st. This is a rare opportunity to experience the California Theatre as it was originally intended, a grand movie palace.

    Films being shown include The Wizard of Oz, Singing in the Rain, An American in Paris, Miracle on 34th Street and a Christmas eve showing of It’s A Wonderful Life. Also included are rare showings of The Sound of Music and My Fair Lady in the splendor of 70mm.

    Grand Theater presents “Miracle on 34th Street” and pipe organ preview

    EAST GREENVILLE, PA — The historic 1924 Grand Theater which underwent a complete and total restoration in 2005, is screening “Miracle on 34th Street” as part of the Grand’s 3rd Annual Christmas Tradition Show.

    The theater’s Christmas Tradition shows have rapidly become one of the most talked about Christmas events in Southeastern PA. This year the feature is the 1947 classic “Miracle on 34th Street”, being presented in its original B&W daily from Friday, December 14th thru Thursday, December 20th. Showtimes are available at the Grand Theater Website or by calling the theater at 215-679-4300.

    In addition to the film, each show will feature the theater decked out in its Christmas finest and the Grand’s in-house organist, Mr. Carl Black playing Christmas organ music prior to showtime. One song is planned to be played on their 2/6 Marr and Colton 1923 Pipe Organ. While the pipe organ is not 100% ready, the Grand is proud to offer a small preview of what is to come.

    Meet Me in St. Louis at the Los Angeles

    LOS ANGELES, CA — The rarely open Los Angeles Theatre will be showing Meet Me in St. Louis this Sunday. It’s at 2PM and tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children. More details are at the Los Angeles Conservancy website. Don’t miss your chance to visit this cinema treasure!

    The theatre will also be part of the Jules Verne Adventure Film Festival.
