MT. VERNON, IL — Next week, the historic Granada Theater celebrates its 70th.

For three days, it will be bright lights in a little city with a number of events celebrating the legacy and long anticipated comeback of the historic Granada Theater.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the grand old Granada Theater which opened in December of 1937 and to commemorate the occasion, Granada Center of the Performing Arts board member David Lister said the community is invited to come together and enjoy all the theater has to offer starting on December 14, 2007.

The restored marquee will be lit for the first time in several years and marks an important milestone in the renovation of the theater. A time capsule buried under the marquee will also be opened. It is said to contain artifacts dating from the 1930s to the 1980s. The capsule “treasures” will be on display at a variety of events to raise money for the ongoing restoration and then reburied for future generations.

A complete rundown of events for the celebration can be found in this article at the morning Sentinel web site.
