Riots destroy Athens cinemas

ATHENS, GREECE — An unpopular loan agreement incited riots around Athens that led to extensive fire damage to the [Asty]/theaters/37677, Attikon and Apollon Renault cinemas. It’s unclear how bad the petrol bombs were but their future looks grim.

Attikon Cinema dating from 1870 burns, as did and a building housing the Asty, an underground cinema used by the Gestapo during World War Two as a torture chamber. Cinemas, like art galleries, help maintaining property values for the bourgeoisie.
It’s a shame that this famous old theater/cinema was set on fire. Apparently it was burned out to the 4 walls. If you want to see what a radical/communist website looks like, the one Howard Haas has found above is a good place to start. Unite in solidarity, all you Cinema Treasures proles !!! (oh, wait – I got carried away from reading the site).

REBUILDING CINEMAS The government will fund the reparations to the neoclassical building housing the historic Attikon and Apollon cinemas, in central Athens. Culture and Tourism Minister Pavlos Yeroulanos announced the decision at yesterday’s cabinet meeting. The two cinemas were seriously damaged in an arson attack during Sunday’s riots in central Athens.
