John Waters heads up effort to buy New Art 3 theater

PROVINCETOWN, MA — A local group headed by director and local resident John Waters is gearing up to acquire the New Art 3 theater at Whaler’s Wharf. It would become the permanent home of the Provincetown International Film Festival.

To make it happen, the festival must raise $450,000 in one year, according to the terms of an agreement with the current owners, Whaler’s Wharf LLC, which also runs the Provincetown Art House Theater across the street.

The festival group would need an additional $200,000 to complete renovations on the small, second-story theater located inside a retail mall known as the Whaler’s Wharf. The theater operated year-round at one time, but has been closed for the past few winters, Hanna said.

The link in the introduction points to the wrong theater (although one is just about across from the other). The group is trying to purchase the New Art 3: /theaters/7647/

If the comments for this little cinema are correct, this is just a little seventy-two seat theater. My guess is that assisting a local group in acquiring this would look a whole lot different to Waters than getting involved with the Senator in its present situation, no matter how much he probably loves it. Aside from the the theater’s size and operating costs, I am sure that the complexities of dealing with the local government agencies in Provincetown are quite different than those in the city of Baltimore.

And it could be that he spends more time in Provincetown than Baltimore.

By the way this theatre is now called the Whalers Wharf Cinema, not New Art 3.
