News About This Theater
- May 13, 2008 — Portland theater scene
The 675 seat Moreland Theatre opened on September 10, 1925 with Rex, the Wild Horse & Guinn Williams in “Black Cyclone”. It has retained its original name and has operated as a movie theatre since its opening. Like many other neighborhood theatres built in the 1920’s, the Moreland Theatre presented vaudeville acts along with silent pictures. The Moreland Theatre originally had a 2/6 Robert Morton organ which was opened by organist Floyd Knutte. In the late-1920’s the stage shows were discontinued in favor of “talkies”.
The Moreland Theatre made changes with the times, updating its equipment, and keeping up with new technology. It retained its single auditorium and distinctive neighborhood appeal though. The Moreland Theatre is still open today and operates as a first run theatre.
