The Isis Theatre, at the northwest corner of SE 13th Avenue and SE Spokane Street, was built in 1908 by William Strahlman, who initially leased the house to Alfred Gleason but took over its operation himself in 1911. It was the first motion picture house in the neighborhood, but soon received competition from the Alpha Theatre, opened the following year a short way up SE 13th Avenue.
In 1911 the owner of the Alpha Theatre closed that house and opened the new Star Theatre at the southwest corner of SE 13th Avenue and Spokane Street. In 1922, the first Sellwood Theatre opened across SE 13th Avenue from the Star Theatre, and the Isis Theatre finally succumbed to the competition in 1924.

According to the Sellwood Bee, the Alpha Theatre, operated by Alfred Griessen, was located in the Strahlman Building. When Griessen built his own theater, the Star, the Alpha was renamed the Isis, which did close in 1924. Griessen’s Star Theater operated from 1911 to 1920 on the southwest corner of SE 13th and Spokane Streets.
It should be noted that the American Motion Picture Directory for 1914-1915 lists all three theaters in Sellwood at the same time.
