AMC opened the Fountain Square 14 in December of 1987. Carmike took over operations in July of 1994. The Fountain Square closed in 1999 and now houses the Watkins College of Art & Design and Watkins Film School.

The former Fountain Square 14 multiplex is now home to Watkins College of Art & Design and the nationally-acclaimed Watkins Film School. The school’s screening room is one of the larger of the 14 theatres, pretty much intact. The restrooms look exactly as they did when the theatre was open for business. I think it’s cool that future filmmakers are learning their craft in a building that was originally built as a theatre. They’re even building dormitory buildings behind the main building in the old rear parking lot for the out-of-state students.
I have many memories of Fountain Square from the late ‘80s. Many Fridays and Saturdays, my dad would drive my brother and I from South Nashville where we lived to Fountain Square to watch the latest movies. It was so beautiful, the lake behind Fountain Square where you could walk along the sidewalk and see all the ducks and catfish (the catfish were near a restaurant that was on the lake). Fountain Square and 100 Oaks Mall remind me so much of my '80s childhood.
When these theatres opened it was to be the next big thing but they did not last too long,luckly it is the film school now.
Too bad AMC sold out here in Nashville. AMC runs a top operation, and was such when they had FS14. Once Carmike got it.. well, like it’s posted, it closed a few years later. If you want your theatre to go down hill… sell it to Carmike.
