Oster Regent Theatre

Frank Cotton was the guiding force behind the construction and opening of the Cotton Theatre in 1910. In 1918, the name was changed to the Regent Theatre. In 1991, the theater building was given to the Cedar Falls Community Theatre (CFCT), which restored the building. The newly restored building was named the Oster Regent Theatre in 1994.

The CFCT stages about four shows per year in the theatre. Several traveling performances per year are booked at the Oster Regent Theatre, including a recent (October 2004) appearance by the von Trapp Family Singers.

The marquee is a little different now… I like that 1982 view, too. The current one is nice, too.

By the way, I clicked on the Photos link that comes up if you hover your cursor over the street view photo, and some of the photos are NOT the Oster Regent Theatre. they are of the Black Hawk Hotel, another historic building that is just down the block from the Oster Regent. I’m not sure how those got in there!

My theatre professor, Stanley G Wood, appeared on the Regent stage as a youngster. He went on to head the theatre program at University of Northern Iowa. Three of us inspired by him went on to become theatre professionals in Seattle, two as artistic directors and one as lighting designer at University of Washington who graduated Yale and designed the Strayer-Wood theatre on the UNI campus. Many other went on to inspire students by teaching theatre arts in high schools, colleges and universities.
