Another GCC house of days gone by - It was built as a single screen and was twinned on December 23, 1970. It was split into a quad on June 25, 1976. At the time I had heard about it was probably another standard William Riseman design - red carpet, white candy stand, red and blue wallpaper and those awful Griggs pushback seats.

The Hartsdale Theatres were actually comprised of two buildings in adjacent shopping centers. Hartsdale 1 & 2 (which opened as a single) is now a Coconuts Music store. Hartsdale 3 & 4, on the right of the shopping center next door, is now part of a Bed, Bath & Beyond store. Both are located on Central Ave. in Hartsdale, just south of Route 119.
When they were showing “Five Easy Pieces” the address was given as Central Park Avenue.
This theater opened around 1964 or 1965 based on a microfilm newspaper story about the shopping center soon to open. It was reported as being an art house in the article and in the early days only, probably was. They did quite well all along, especially with the 1970’s blockbusters like “Serpico”, “Death Wish” both “Godfather” films, etc. I worked at Hartsdale 2 on the north end of the center and both complexes were converted to twins in the mid 1970’s.
They hung on after National Amusements opened in nearby Hawthorne, but the later opened Cross County Multiplex likely was the final
blow to both Hartsdale Cinemas.
GCC had really established itself as the predominant operator in mid-lower Westchester during the 1960’s through 1970’s. They were always aggressive in not waiting for the competition to take a potential theater site and that is why they opened Harstdale 2 after hearing that Loews was interested.
Spent half my youth at these theaters…Saw everything from THE BAD NEWS BEARS, GREASE, SUPERMAN II, THE ROAD WARRIOR to HOOK, GRUMPY OLD MEN and THE GODFATHER PART III. I miss these theaters so much…other movies seen at these two Twins…BEVERLY HILLS COP, INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM, SAY ANYTHING, THE ABYSS…and so much more
I definitely remember seeing Grease many, many times in Hartsdale Cinema 1. Saw Raiders of the Lost Ark there, too. It was a Coconuts Music Store once, but for the past five or six years it’s been a Verizon Wireless store. Hartsdale Cinema 2, which became twin cinemas, became a Bed, Bath, & Beyond is now a Christmas Tree Store. Miss both of these classic cinemas.
This and the Galleria Twin were the two cinemas I visited most frequently during my childhood. Interestingly enough, I saw Back to the Future and Back to the Future Part II at the Hartsdale 3 & 4 on the same screen. I think the last film I saw before it closed was A Perfect World sophomore year in college.
