Saenger Theatre

The Saenger Theatre opened on November 21, 1929 with Nancy Carroll in “Sweetie”. It was designed by Emile Weil. It was the last Saenger Theatre to be built and opened by the circuit as they were taken over by Publix. It was equipped with a Robert Morton 2 manual 6 ranks organ which had previously been installed in the Strand Theatre, Hattiesburg. The organ was removed from the Saenger Theatre in 1972 having been purchased by an individual. It operated as a movie house until closure came in 1974.

ABC Interstate Theatres donated the theatre to the City of Hattiesburg. The original Robert Morton organ was return to the theatre, now enlarged with the console enlarged to 3 manuals and 8 Ranks. It has been restored and today operates as a venue for live performances.

This is a college town so glad to read that this MS Saenger Theatre has been restored and today operates as a venue ofr live performances (and movies?)though I wonder what the current status is due to Katrina?

Looks fine to me, but then again suppose the color photo was taken pre-Katrina!

I saw Disney’s “Song Of The South” at this old theater back in 1972. It was glorious on the big screen. I’m glad to see it’s fine after Katrina.

Remember all the fuss about “The Exorcist” in 1974?
