Originally on this site stood the Broad Street Cinema. It showed the first ‘talkie’ in Waterford. It was demolished and the Savoy Cinema was built on the site, opening in 1936 with Jeanette McDonald & Nelson Eddy in “Rose Marie”. It was designed in an Art Deco style by the firm of Robinson & Keefe, the Savoy in Waterford could seat 1,200. It had a fully equipped stage, two dressing rooms and there was a cafe attached.
In its last years, the Savoy Cinema also functioned as a concert venue which closed in June 1976. The Savoy Cinema’s lobby area today houses a fast food restaurant and its simple but elegant Deco facade has been substantially remodeled. A bookshop operates in the auditorium space.
