This movie theatre of the Grands Boulevards was erected in 1940 on the spot where the 19th century Theatre des Varieties formerly stood.
The auditorium was located under the street and was converted into two screens in the 1980’s. A small entrance in the building led to a huge lobby which also was underground.
The one level main auditorium with a curved plaster ceiling looked like a submarine. For a long time Les Vedettes was a first run theatre which was very profitable, but in the 1980’s with the multiplexing of the theatres around it, a program policy was difficult to find for this independent movie theatre and it turned to adult movies in the late-1980’s.
Once a bombing in the next building, a bank, did a major damage: the ceiling collapsed.
After closing around 1985 and standing dark for a long time, Les Vedettes, along with a former movie theatre in the next building (the Lumiere), was converted to a large record and video store.
