This started out life in 1879 as the Foster Building(s). Live productions and silent movies were brought to town and presented in the Aerodome just down the street in an empty lot. The Foster Building(s) started out in 1913 as the Happy Hour Theatre when the weather got bad they would bring the productions inside.
It was still known as the Happy Hour Theatre in 1929, but in 1930 had been renamed Lyric Theater. In 1952 it received a major renovation which included a facelift and marquee along with its balcony. In 1967 the final show was “Beach Blanket Bingo”. After several owners, in the late-summer of 2016 the Lyric Theater was renovated and reopened its doors again in 2017 for movies, live performances and events. New owners took over in 2020 and the Lyric Theatre began another extensive renovation. By 2022 it was screening classic & revival movies.

James, you have no contact info, and I’ve been by there 3 times in June, and no one is ever around. I’d like to take some photos for the group.
August 21, 2009, marks the end of the Lyric’s second successful “Movies On Main” program. This is an outdoor series of films shown in the empty lot next door, onto a screen painted on side of the Lyric.
Hopefully this fall when it gets just a little cooler the clean up / out of the Lyric can start. This will allow interior renovations to begin, and its going to take a lot.

The Movies On Main program is back for the summer of 2011. This year sponsored by the City of Flatonia, with each movie being sponsored by a movie loving donor. If you are in the area on friday night at sundown, feel free to stop by and enjoy a great movie under the stars. Movies On Main, back for our 4th season of outdoor movies show on the wall of the Lyric Theater. Planning for a GREAT season, starting up with “UP” June 2nd 9 pm ish, Stop by and have a nice relaxing night at the movies!
April 8th and 9th 2016 the Lyric Theater will be hosting its FIRST live performance. Making Love in Public, a romantic comedy will be presented by Smithvilleplayhouse.com beginning at 7:30 pm. Many exciting things are beginning to happen at the Lyric stay tuned.
Testing out the new Epson 4k projector and its pretty amazing, also have been working on getting the concession stand set up. Its really starting to take shape now that it has REAL seats again!!
Still seems to be used for select events still. The main visual difference seems to be the added mint color from the tile work to the marque sign as well. (see latest pics)
