Valentine Theatre

Opened in 1920, this was one of several theatres on E. Fordham Road in the Bronx. It contained 1,252 seats and had a 482-seat Roof Theatre on top of the building. It was built for the Grob & Knobel circuit. Later operated by Skouras Theaters Corp. and, later, United Artists, it was remodeled in 1950 to the plans of architect William Lescaze. It was still open in 1978. Retail stores now occupy the building.

The theatre can be seen in the Roy Scheider film, “The Seven-Ups”.

The inside was identical to the Sutton in Manhattan.

I remember going there when I was a kid. It only cost 25 cents back then. I lived on 183 Street on the Grand Concourse and we had 6 theaters back then. It was nice to see old pictures and remember the fond memories.

I went to the Valentine in the ‘60s, and my memory is that they always (or almost always) broke up the film with an intermission, no matter how short it was

I remember seeing, “Dog Day Afternoon” there. In 1978, they hired a new Manager, who previously worked for Brandt Theaters. A handsome man, who wore silk suits and French cuffs. He brought a lot of class to the theater.
