The Liberty Hall opened its doors on October 18, 1886 with a production of “A Wife’s Sacrifice” by the Agnes Wallace Villa Company, and officially became Indiana’s first movie theater during the turn of the 20th century. It was closed during the mid-1920’s, and the Rochester & Pittsburgh Coal Company later occupied the site for its Indiana division office.
The hall features a 30x54ft stage that was designed by the Sosman and Landis Company of Chicago, and the original drop represents a Swiss scenery of St. Gingolph. The theater housed 1,010 seats, with 800 comfortable seats and 210 folding opera chairs. The building was also lightened with 100 gas jets, and at the orchestra pit features a Hardman Grand Concert Piano that at the time of opening was brand new.
