The building housing the Victory Theatre dated back to 1928. It was built by the West Kentucky Coal Company for its Employees Mutual Benefit Association (EMBA) and five other local business offices. Its main attribute was a multipurpose auditorium that included EMBA basketball games. The operators of the Ritz Theatre, William Earl Horsefield and Mr. and Mrs. Edwin “Eddie” Johnson, had formed KenMo Amusement Company. In September of 1941, they decided to move the Ritz there for a capacity of 800 seats.
Between the planning and the doing, Pearl Harbor took place and the “New Ritz” instead opened as the more patriotically named, Victory Theatre, with a scaled-back 340 seats. The venue launched on February 15, 1942.
The Victory’s final show turned out to be November 26, 1958 with Shirley Booth as “The Matchmaker” and Gary Merrill in “Crash Landing” supported by a cartoon. In the early morning the next day, the theatre occupying the rear of the EMBA building was destroyed by fire. The fire department saved the rest of the building, which still stands in a derelict condition.

I have given the address of the EMBA building, although the theater space may have been entered from 6th St. The building is in perilous shape. It appears to have been vacant since at least 2014. The location of the gym/theater space is now some cheap metal sheds housing the city hall and fire department.
