Gem Theater

This theater appears on the 1912 Sanborn. It was located in a two story brick building constructed sometime between 1891 and 1896, and which had most recently been a tailors. The building had a large bay with a slate roofed tower above it.

The Gem Theatre was listed in the 1914-15 AMPD. It was still open in March 1919. It had closed by 1924, when the map shows a store here. The building still shows most of its historic fabric on the 2009 street view, but by 2015 the facade had been destroyed, and replaced with cheap and grim cinderblock, also ruining the building to the east. The rear still shows the screen tower, and the building is used by a medical equipment company.

The April, 1911 issue of Motography said “[t]he Gem moving picture theater was recently opened at Punxsutawney under the management of Harry P. Hillard.” As no other unidentified theaters appear on the 1912 Sanborn map, The house at 109 E. Mahoning must have been the Gem.

The Gem was still open in 1919, when it was mentioned in the March 1 issue of Moving Picture World.
