Theater

This theater appears on the 1914 Sanborn. It was located in a two story brick storefront which was constructed sometime between 1905 and 1909, as this block of Main Street changed from a collection of small wooden storefronts. The 1909 map shows a barber and pool hall here.

This may have been the Berlin Theatre, which is the only listing in the 1914-15 AMPD without an address. Later maps are unavailable online, but this likely was closed by 1926, when only two theaters are listed (although it may have been the Echo Theater, in which case the capacity was 400).

This building was one of many in Great Bend’s rather dismal downtown to be given a horrific slipcover. Thankfully, this was removed sometime after 2022, revealing the original facade. The building appears to be in the process of remodeling.

It’s also possible that this may have been the Novelty Theatre, which is listed in the AMPD with an impossible 1317 address, which would have put it on the courthouse lawn.
