Located at the corner of Rue de la Republique and Rue Gentil in the west of the city centre. The 260-seat Artistic Cinema was opened in 1911. The entrance was at 13 Rue Gentil.

In 1948 it was remodeled in an Art Deco style to the plans of architect M. Georges Peynet and reopened as the Cinema Ambiance. This operated until 1967. It reopened in 1969 as the Cinextra-Republique.

In October 1979 it was converted into a three screen cinema by adding two screens into adjacent premises, retaining the original auditorium, and moving the entrance to the corner at 12 Rue de La Republique. It returned to its Cinema Ambiance name. It screened films with their original language version, with French sub-titles. It was closed on December 15, 2006 when the owner of the building sold it to a real estate group.

The building was gutted in January 2008 with the auditorium ceiling being removed and a glazed covering replacing it. The balcony (with side slips extending forward to the proscenium) was retained and the auditorium was converted into a supermarket using the orchestra and balcony levels. Last operating as a Monop supermarket, it had closed by early-2025.
