Casino Kursaal

Opened in 1863 as the Café Chantant (Singing Café), this was a narrow building of five stories, with the lower portion quite ornately decorated in sort of a Beaux-Arts style. The opera-café was rather like a music hall in concept.

The auditorium was styled like an older European opera house, with multi-level balconies running right up to the wall beside the stage. There was fairly elaborate plaster decoration, and an ornately painted stage curtain.

Sometime around 1900, it was renamed Casino Kursaal. Starting around 1906, films were offered periodically. It was closed in 1931 and the building was demolished in 1932 to be replaced by the Pathé Palace.
