Both the Ueno Shochiku Theater and the Ueno Meigaza Theater opened its doors in November 1953, with the Shochiku located on the 2nd floor and the Meigaza in the basement floor, both in the Shochiku Department Store in Ueno Park. Two more screens were added during the 1970’s and 1980’s, with Screens 1 and 4 on the 2nd floor and Screens 2 and 3 on the basement floor.

Screen 1 housed 619 seats and was the primary theater for popular American, foreign, and Japanese films in the area under the Shochiku formula. Screen 4 housed 63 seats which primarily shows both Japanese and foreign X-rated movies but after the Heisei era began, it began showing more movies that had been moved over from other theaters. Screen 4 last operated as a roadshow house. Screens 2 and 3 housed 105 seats in the basement floor and both last operated as a foreign and Japanese film house. Screen 2 originally started life as the Ueno Basement Theater. After the nearby Ueno Nikkatsu Theater closed in the 1970’s, it became a Nikkatsu Theater screening Nikkatsu’s Roman X-rated films. Screen 3 in the other hand also primarily showed similar content as Screen 4, except Screen 3 focused more on Tokatsu content.

The Ueno Theaters closed on May 14, 2006. The department store continued to operate until August 31, 2012. It was demolished at the end of that same year and a food court called the “Ueno No Moro Sakura Terrace” opened at the former theater site on April 26, 2014.
