Theatre Tokyo

The Theatre Tokyo was opened on 29th November 1962. Seating was provided in orchestra and balcony levels. It was initially equipped with 3-strip Cinerama, and had a louvered screen 85 feet wide and 29 feet wide. It operated as a Cinerama theatre until 30th April 1965.

From 5th May 1965 until its closing on 30th October 1981, it operated as a 70mm cinema.

The Theatre Tokyo was demolished and the Hotel Seibu Saison was built on the site.

I saw “The Dirty Dozen” there in 1967 when on R&R from Vietnam. Projected in 70mm the image was super big. Interestingly, the film was subtitled but when the Germans were speaking the subtitles were in Japanize. As a projectionist later in the US I was surprised that 70mm prints did not happen there.
