American Multi Cinema (AMC) had come into the Louisville market in 1971 with the J-Town 4. But the Raceland 4 project actually predated the J-Town 4.
The Raceland Mall had been announced in 1968. The AMC theatre was approved for the Mall in 1970. But the project dragged on ending up with the developer in receivership. The project languished while the J-Town 4 had already launched.
The Raceland Mall did make its debut with W.T. Grant’s Grant City as an anchor. The AMC Raceland 4 and the AMC Westland 4 both debuted on July 23, 1975 after a “get acquainted” soft launch with four different dollar films. The Raceland opened the next day with “The Drowning Pool”“ "Doc Savage”, The Wild McCullouchs", and “Bug”.
Mid States Cinemas (MSC) took on the properties in May of 1977 operating the Raceland 4, Westland 4, Oxmoor 5, and J-Town 4. USA Cinemas took on the operational control of Midstates in 1985. In 1988, Loews bought out USA Cinemas with the name changing to the Loews Raceland Theatres 4.
Loews was building a 10-plex that would doom its Raceland property. Loews closed the Raceland on May 18, 1989 with “Stripped to Kill”, “Criminal Law”, “She’s Out of Control”, and “Fletch Lives”. Loews raced out of the dying mall as the previous owner hadn’t fixed a porous roof or done enough upgrades to keep the mall from reaching greyfield status - a term akin to a “dead mall”. It retained its Westland 4 under the mall’s new name of the Loews Park Place 4 until it closed in May of 1990 with that mall in deep trouble.
The Raceland found a new owner who was announced a renaming as the Creekside Pavilion just two weeks after the Loews packed up. That renaming never took place and the cinema remained vacant until the entire center was demolished.
