Cine Excelsior

The Cine Excelsior was built by the Catholic church. It was built on the site of the Cine Sao Jeronimo and opened on April 17, 1935. The original intention was to screen religious films, but soon after opening it screened general release films which had been ‘approved’ by the Catholic church. The Cine Excelsior was closed in the late-1980’s.

It stood abandoned until December 2022 when it was announced the building would be renovated to become a conference centre with the possibility to screen films. It was planned to open in December 2024.
