On September 17, 1916, the Humboldt Times reported the building formerly known as the Grand Theater on F street was being remodeled and decorated by architect Edmund Burke and will be known as the Portola Theater.

The Times noted the theater was to be operated by Pietro Marino and the seating capacity was more than 400 persons. Marino “promises the public one of the most up-to-the-minute picture houses on the coast".

The Portola Theater opened October 4, 1916, with a play and showed its first movie, Charley Chaplin in “His Musical Career” on November 3, 1916.

The Portola Theater was in the Humboldt times until 1921 and by 1952 the Bank of America was operating on the site.
