The Kitami Chuo Theater opened its doors on August 10, 1956 as a 550-seat single-screener.
At the time, there were only four theaters in Kitami City including the Kitami Chuo. There is also the Inariza Theater (opened in 1936), the Kitami Yurakaza Theater (opened in 1940), and the Kitami Orion Theater (formerly the Kitami Meigaza which opened in 1951).
In the 1970’s, Kitami Toho withdrew from the movie theater business and the theater was rebuilt as a commercial building with one basement floor and five aboveground floors, including a bowling alley named “Bowl Kitami”, and at the time, the number of movie theaters in the city was halved to four theaters.
The Kitami Chuo Theater was twinned in 1977 and its seating was updated to 640 seats (360 in Screen 1 and 280 in Screen 2) under the auditorium names “Kitami Chugeki” and “Millionza” (later renamed “Theatre Kitami”).
However, when the Warner Mycal Cinemas Kitami (now Aeon Cinema Kitami) opened in September 2000, the number of audience members at the Kitami Chugeki dropped sharply until closing for the final time on February 25, 2001.
