Majestic Theatre

The local market house was constructed sometime before 1894. It may have been quite a bit older. It was a two story brick building, and was located on the north side of what is now Water Street, directly opposite the north end of Washington Street. It sat in a small square, no longer extant.

The 1894 map shows an opera house on the second floor, but by 1900 it was used as city hall. This continued at least through early 1910, but the 1915 map shows the Majestic Theatre sharing the second floor with the city hall.

It’s unclear when it closed, and the building was long ago demolished. The site today is a small park. Note that Water Street seems to have been known as 1st Street for some time around the period the theatre operated, and that the Roanoke River is quite a bit closer to town than it used to be.
