In Rotorua, in the Bay of Plenty Region of the North Island, the Basement Cinema opened in 2000. Current owner Simon Reilly acquired “the business” in 2009 when it was a shopping mall. Mr Reilly adapted the space into its current activities.
These are a rather unique combination of climbing wall and cinema! “The Wall” is an 18m high indoor rock climbing facility, while the Basement Cinema is the city’s self-proclaimed “answer to alternative cinema”.
The small auditoria, having just 23 and 13 seats, are equipped with “comfy lounging seats” and show a wide range of ‘art-house’ films.
The lounge bar stocks an extensive range of New Zealand wines and craft beers.

During a visit to Rotorua I met owner Simon Reilly, who said that the building was originally opened as a shopping mall. The climbing wall had opened in 1999, with the cinema following in 2000. The upper floors are home to Rock Solid Backpackers accommodation. As the Overview says, Simon acquired the business in 2009.
