The Gatlinburg Place IMAX theatre was built by Le Conte Corporation and Famous Players, the largest theatre chain in Canada and opened on June 28, 1980. It later became the Great Smokies Mega Theatre which closed on July 28, 2001 and demolished in 2004 and replaced with a Holiday Inn. An article appears in Famous News (January 1981) on page 8 by Famous Players Canada, Ltd., which can be found at the Internet Archive.

This was the first and only American location for Famous Players and the 2nd IMAX for the chain with the first being built in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Grand opening ad posted.
