The Cherokee Theatre was opened on May 15, 1950 by Newport Amusements Inc. The theater seated 1,050 including the balcony which seated 214.
The theatre closed in September 1962 and was remodeled to become the Gatlinburg Wax Museum which opened in the spring of 1963. The wax museum closed in the 1990’s
Currently the old theatre building houses Cooter’s Place which is an amusement center with indoor go-carts.

Billy Barnes who was the popular organist at the Tennessee Theatre in Knoxville played on opening night on the Hammond Organ. I am assuming that the organ (and Billy) were just loaners and not a permanent installation.
