Columbia Theatre

This theatre appears on the 1910 Sanborn, in an old two story brick commercial building dating to before 1885. The 1900 map shows a millinery here. The theatre remains in operation on the 1918 map, but closed sometime afterward.

The 1962 update shows it as a store. This block is a really awful collection of empty lots and ugly modern facade. The building became a pawn shop and it still exists in 2025 operating as a bookstore, and has been incorporated into a neighbor.

This was the Columbia Theatre at 108 E. 4th Street. Circa 1910 postcard image added credit Deb Mather Renner, courtesy Ritchie Miller. The building still stands today as Soul Book Nook using the 110 E. 4th Street address, a combination of the 106, 108 & 110 addresses shown on the Sanborn map.

Also added the Google street view, the building with the Surplus sign is the former Columbia Theatre.

The Columbia Theatre did had a few fire incidents, one of which gutted the entire theater in late-November 1898, and another one destroyed its projection equipment after film caught fire on May 23, 1920. The Columbia closed in December 1927 and was converted into a storeroom on June 26, 1928.
