Town Hall Theater

Built in 1883, the Town Hall has been a performing arts theater, town offices, a restaurant, a home for the Knights of Columbus, and a 350-seat movie house.

It was recently purchased by the Middlebury Community Players, a local theater group, for $250,000, which the group raised through three years of fundraising. Ultimately, the group will need to raise a total of $3.8 million to reopen the theater as planned.

In 2000 the theater was awarded a $50,000 grant to reopen the theatre later in the summer. Fundraising was completed and the Players gutted and renovated the theater. The new theater seats 232 patrons and it reopened in 2008.

I was recently passing through on a cycling trip. The address listed as 10 Merchants Row is wrong as there’s already a 10 in the block of buildings down the street by the coffeehouse and bicycle shop.

There was a huge banner hanging in town about the theatre’s reopening and town celebration and it was mentioned in many newspapers I picked up during my 10-day trip.

The Town Hall Theatre is mentioned in the current issue of Opera News Magazine. There is a nice exterior photo. The article says it opened in 1883 and has 232 seats. There are an average of 165 events there per season. It’s home base for the Opera Company of Middlebury which has been doing well there.
