Surf Twin Drive-in

The Surf Twin Drive-In was opened by Peter Duplissey on May 2, 1953 with Bob Hope in “Son of Paleface” & John Lund in “Dear Brat”. It was located on Broad Street, and was just down the road from the New Moon Twin Drive-In which was operated by Southern Amusements Company. Six months after opening, Southern Amusements Company took over the Surf Twin Drive-In. The Surf Twin Drive-In was closed on April 11, 1957 with Bing Crosby & Bob Hope in “Road to Bali” & John Agar in “Hold Back Tomorrow”. It was demolished by 1963, and the site today is various small commercial buildings.

This is the wrong address and name of the ozoner. Percy Duplissey built the Surf Twin Drive-In Theatre about a mile from Southern Amusement’s Round-Up Drive-In Theatre. The idea was to out screen the venue. But six months after opening, Southern bought out the venue. Meanwhile, Walter’s Gaurino’s Open Air Theatres Inc. was opening the New Moon Twin Drive-In.

The Surf Twin was located at your choice of 1001 9th Avenue or 2450 Broad Street. The address currently listed here is for the single-screen Round-Up Drive-In a mile away. The Surf Twin reportedly opened May 2, 1953 and was the first of the venues to drop by the wayside in the early 1960s.

A 1963 aerial showed the drive-in had been demolished for some time. Most of the property sat virtually untouched for almost two decades.

Today, you can still seen hints of the ramps on the north side.

Opened on April 28, 1953 with Bob Hope in “Son of Paleface” and John Lund in “Dear Brat” along with an unnamed cartoon and a newsreel playing on both screens.

This was extremely short-lived, closing after just four years of operation on April 11, 1957 with Bing Crosby in “Road To Bali” and Cleo Moore in “Held Back Tomorrow” (unknown if extras added). Its phone number was moved to the nearby Round-Up Drive-In.
